The capital of the federal state of the same name and fourth largest city of Austria is valid with their baroque domes and churches, crowned from the fortress Hohensalzburg, as one of the most beautiful cities of the world.
Already the Illyrer gave the name to the place " luvavum" (" Seat of the sky god"), which later the Celts and also the Romans took over. Around 696 the history of the today's city began, as the Hl. Rupert based the monasteries St. Peter and Nonnberg. Under the prince archbishops, which became religious national princes, the fortress Hohensalzburg delighted and the city the baroque residence arranged. 1816 Salzburg came to Austria and became finally 1920 state capital of the Austrian Federal state.
Their world-famousness owes the city on the river Salzach to the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who saw 1756 the light of the world here. Since 1870 exist the international foundation Mozarteum and since 1920 annually the Salzburger festivals are organized.
